Workshop Rubber Mold Making

Rubber Mold Making and Casting Workshop
October 29 & 30

Learn to make copies of three-dimensional objects, original sculptures or even your hand. Join us for John Reynolds’ Rubber Mold Making and Casting Workshop on October 29 (Friday, 9:30am-5pm) & October 30 (Saturday, 9:30am-noon).

This is a perfect workshop for anyone wanting to learn mold making and especially for those interested in creating rubber molds for the lost wax process – a technique that can be used in metal and glass casting.

Students will learn:

  • The different mold materials available.
  • The design for their application.
  • Making one time and multiple use molds.
  • Open faced molds, two part molds and brush on molds.
  • Dealing with undercuts.
  • Construction and use of support shells.
  • Materials for casting a copy of the original.
  • The cold cast bronze technique.
  • And much more.

Students will come away with at least one rubber mold and use that mold to make a copy of the object in plastic.

Students are asked to bring one (1) small, simple line object no larger than a soda can.  A sculpted object, such as a base relief tile, must be made of an oil based, sulfur free clay.  A sculpted object of water-based clay MUST be air dried and sealed.  Students may bring additional objects for Mr. Reynolds to review and make recommendations on what method should be used to create a rubber casting mold.

This workshop is not limited to those only working in glass.  This workshop is valuable to persons wanting to make copies of an original in many different mediums including plastic, metal, glass and plaster.

Note to glass folks –Stick around after Mr. Reynolds’ workshop and we will discuss how to use your rubber mold to create a wax copy in the lost wax process for casting glass.  The mold you create in class will be used to cast a plastic copy of your original.  This is a great foundation for a workshop that will take place later in the year on lost wax casting.
