Rhino, Rottweiler or Rat
Clay Tile Relief Sculpting Workshop with Joy Mullett
October 21 – 10am to 5pm

Joy is a very talented artist working in many different media.  I was awe struck with her bas relief and thought:  What a perfect media and starting point for folks wanting to cast in glass!  Not just for glass persons though since this fantastic workshop is a great foundation for learning how to sculpt bas relief in clay.

Led by Houston artist Joy Mullett, this workshop is for the beginning sculptor and will include an overview of sculpting tools, working out design considerations, and techniques for solving problems you may run into as you sculpt.

You’ll learn:

  • 3D vs. relief sculpture – what’s the difference? – it’s all about deception

  • Tools overview – lighting, instruments, turntables
  • Design considerations for your sculpture – media, scale, perspective
  • Studio time to create your sculpture – solving problems with abstraction, emphasis, gesture sketching, simplification
  • Next steps – what can be done with your tile as is, making copies, or even creating it in glass

Bring a photo of your favorite animal or pet to use as model for your tile.  If you don’t have a pic to bring, we’ll have some available for you there.  Joy will also provide examples of relief sculpting in art and on decor items.

Beyond the clay tile…

You’ll end up with a very nice tile that can be fired and complete as is or it can be used in other workshops including the Rubber Mold Making and Casting Workshop (October 29/30) where you will learn how to make rubber molds that can be used to replicate your tiles in other mediums including plastic and even wax as a part of the lost wax glass casting workshop that will be scheduled early next year.

About Joy Mullett…

Houston artist Joy Mullett uses several techniques and media to create art, including acrylic paint, monotyping, digital graphics and glass, but she has a special affection for relief sculpting in clay because it creates depth and distance where there are none.   "Now that’s just cool," she says.

Joy’s work has been juried into exhibits throughout the United States, including Vibrant: Houston Artists in City Halls, shown in Houston City Hall in 2008. She has served as an artist-in-residence at an HISD school, and received grants for temporary public art and for art projects designed to broaden middle-school students’ understanding of space exploration.

You meet folks sometimes that you just like right from the start. Joy is one of those persons and a fantastic artist!
