Valentine’s Platters
Etching & Sand Blasting with Guest Artist Andre Bally

Hearts, Cupids, Roses and more (but NOT the Bride of Frankenstein) …

(We will be using gold bearing glasses in your large platter for those perfect pink transparent colors!)

In this exciting hands-on workshop, you will create at least three beautiful etched glass gently slumped pieces while learning various techniques for etching glass including acid etching, sandblasting and glass carving using the stage blasting process to create multiple image depths in glass.

Using these glass etching techniques, students will learn safety procedures in using and storing acid pastes and what’s required to properly operate a compressor based sand blasting system.

You will learn how to create your images through both hand cut and computer assisted stencil masking systems. You will be able to select from several themed Valentine’s Day Themed stencils prepared ahead of time or create your own images to use in this workshop.  You will even have a chance to create a flashed glass etched piece using Bullseye Glass Steel Blue Opal glass.

Learn from Houston’s own very talented artist, Andre Bally, whose blasted glass pieces will inspire you in this thrilling method of creating imagery on glass.  You’ll come away with your own etched glass art as well as a solid technical foundation for future blasted and etched glass projects.

About Andre Bally…

After graduating from Texas A&M University, Andre worked for A&M in their Student Services Craft Center where he began a lifelong undertaking, researching and experimenting with ceramics, glass and metal. After more than thirty years, Andre produces works in each medium, combining them for unique results. While admitting his first love continues to be clay, Andre spends significant time developing and executing etched and carved glass designs.

With his wife, Virginia, Andre founded BALLY STUDIOS in 1994 and their partnership has been greatly influenced by traditional Japanese design motifs as well as those of the North American Indian Tribes. Along with a diverse Art and Design background, these influences are reflected in the designs and finishes of their work. This, fused with long hours of research and experimentation, makes each piece they produce completely unique. Their work can be found on exhibit in private collections in Canada, Europe, North Africa and the United States.

Bally Studios pieces have been featured at the Galveston Art Center (1996 -2000) and the Sable V Gallery in Galveston and Wimberley, Texas (2000-2003). In October of 2009 Andre was awarded “First Place” in the Clay Houston – Hanson Galleries Juried show “Spirit of Clay”. In October of 2010 Andre was awarded “Second Place” in the Clay Houston – Hanson Galleries Juried show “Spotlight on Clay”.

Currently his work is being shown in the Hanson Galleries Uptown Park Location in Houston, the Asher Gallery of the Houston Center for Contemporary Craft and can also be viewed at www.ballystudios.com or by appointment at their Studio in Humble, Texas.
