Layered Assemblage: Creating Visual Complexity with
Bullseye Glass Guest Artist Martha Pfanschmidt

April 19, 20, 21 & 22, 2012
Thu thru Sat 10:00am to 5:00pm & Sun 10:00am to Noon

Working with the techniques Martha Pfanschmidt has developed for creating her colorful abstract works, the students will use colored powders and glasses to construct multi-layered, thick pieces that have a complex and yet clear visual language.  From patterned and colored parts the students create they will develop larger compositions by cutting and re-assembling the parts into final “collaged” pieces.

About Martha Pfanschmidt…

Martha Pfanschmidt has taught printmaking at Marylhurst and Portland State Universities while also operating the Portland-based group print workshop Atelier Mars with Tom Prochaska. She was introduced to glass through a workshop led by Tom Prochaska and Ted Sawyer in 2003, followed by a two-week Artist/Factory Exchange Project at Bullseye later that year titled “Found In Translation.” Pfanschmidt has since gone on to make commissioned works in glass for high-profile building projects and private clients, and to participate in another Artist/Factory Exchange Project called “Printmakers Fired.”

Martha Pfanschmidt lives in Port Townsend, Washington and maintains studios in Port Townsend and Portland, Oregon. She received an MFA from Vermont College, and has worked as a professional artist for 30 years. Since retiring from teaching at University she has taught workshops throughout the United States. Her work is included in the collections of the China National Academy of Fine Arts, Beijing; Portland Art Museum, Oregon; Museu da Gravura, Cidade de Curitiba, Brazil; and the New York Public Library.

“Making art is speaking in a visual language. Glass and paintings are merely dialects of the same language. Color, tone, line and shape are some of the words that make up that language. In my work these elements are the expression of the sensual life made visible.” – Martha Pfanschmidt.

Marhtha is a featured artist at the Bullseye Glass Gallery exhibit who is currently featured in the Bullseye Glass Gallery exhibit, Fracture – Artists at the Forefront of Painterly Glass.
